How to use the stereonet plotter

What is a stereonet?
A stereonet (stereographic net) is a 2D plot that represents 3D orientation data — the strikes and dips of planes, or the trends and plunges of lines. Structural geologists use the lower-hemisphere equal-area (Schmidt) projection because it preserves the density of data points, which makes clusters, girdles, and preferred orientations easy to see.
Each plane can be shown two ways: as a great circle (the arc where the plane intersects the hemisphere) or as a single pole (the point representing the line perpendicular to the plane). Poles are usually preferred when you have many measurements — a tight cluster of poles means consistently oriented planes, while poles spread along a great-circle path (a girdle) often indicate folding.

Strike uses the right-hand rule (dip is 90° clockwise from strike). You can also enter dip direction + dip — tick the box and it converts to strike automatically.
